Women in architecture, fresh perspectives
19 June 2022
Prominent Iranian architects gather at the unveiling of a special issue concentrating on conversations with contemporary architects of Iran and notable individuals in construction industry. The event also featured Iranian women architects who play pivotal roles at the highest professional levels in contemporary Iranian architecture.
Over the years, women have faced significant challenges in finding their place in Iranian architecture. Following the Islamic Revolution, opportunities for Iranian women in various professions, including architecture, diminished. However, in the recent decade, there has been a remarkable shift, with women architects breaking stereotypes and emerging as influential figures in the field.
Delaram Bolourchi (above), for instance, has achieved astonishing success as an author architect, establishing her own studio called "Hasht" and overseeing the construction of notable projects such as the "Hakim Azam" building. Her journey serves as an inspiration for many aspiring Iranian women architects.
These women bring a fresh perspective to architectural design, focusing on issues such as equity, sustainability, and inclusivity. With the male-dominated era of architecture coming to an end, women are being recognized and celebrated through various architectural prizes. Their deep understanding of gender discrimination and inequality in Iranian society helps them challenge norms and support the women's community.
In addition to their contributions to architecture, women also play an important role in architectural magazines. Villa Magazine, for example, is predominantly led by women and the younger generation. This generation of architects, both men and women, holds great promise for the future of Iranian architecture. With their passion, talent, and determination, they are sure to leave an indelible mark on the architectural landscape of Iran.
