Villa Magazine Interview

VILLA MAGAZINE INTERVIEW

This is an interview with  Markus Roselieb by AmirAbbas Aboutalebi about villa typology, has been published in Villa Magazine, No.8

Villa Do you consider villas as an independent typology in architecture?

Roselieb Yes of course

Villa Do you agree with this statement? “Designing villas is a more appropriate topic for practicing and experiencing the intellectual approach of leading architects and architectural offices.”

Roselieb my answer would be that it is very important for me to not only create architecturally outstanding villas but places that are actually homes for real people. Creating a villa means creating a space that furthers family life is at the core of our philosophy. The architecture has to capture the inhabitants' mind and make them smile every time they see it and the spaces within have to create a feeling of freedom, coziness, and security at the same time.

Villa Why sometimes architects call their villa project, a house?

Roselieb This and the next questions depend on your definitions. If “house” is taken as the bigger heading for any structure that functions as a human dwelling, “villa” could be a sub-category for those bigger, more imaginative and luxurious ones mostly on the countryside and thus “qualify” as “house”.

Villa In your opinion, what is the most distinct difference between a house and a villa?

Roselieb But to continue on my answer above, “house” could also be the description for those dwellings who merely fulfill the function of providing a roof over one’s head without considerations of context and quality.  Whereas a villa provides real quality of life through thoughtful integration into its local and cultural settings as well as design.

Villa Which category does your project belong to? Urban/rural villa, Permanent villa (residence)/ Temporary villa (leisure)

Roselieb Closest description probably sub-urban to a rural residence

Villa If Villa Magazine was to throw a worldwide competition for villas, which kind of categorizing do you prefer?

A: Villas below 100 m², 100-250 m², 250-500 m², 500-1000 m² and more

B: Mountain villas, Forest villas, Beach villas, Desert villas, …

Roselieb Definitely B is the more telling definition

Villa What suggestions and criticisms do you have about our work?

Roselieb Don’t have any at this point.
